USA Eastern Organiser for the GCC

Welcome Dorothy Eckes!

One small step and a bit of a leap into what technology can do to connect the world.

We now have merged Google Calendars in different time zones, viewable through different time zones. And it all works beautifully!

The global resource of virtual coaching-related meetings and courses

My aim (I have finally realised) is to create a global resource of virtual coaching-related meetings and courses, ie. events that can be attended by phone or the internet. NOT face-to-face courses in particular places in the world, BUT global events, meetings and courses that reach out and touch the people around the planet!

From GCC2009 I learned that
  • the time and date of the events needs to be displayed in LOCAL TIME
  • many contributors and participants will come from countries outside Europe and the US, even though the majority may well come from there to begin with.

So I am creating, for several time zones (including USA, UK, Australia, Sweden... )
  • an e-mail address
  • a website
  • a calendar

so that local leaders can
  • receive relevant correspondence by e-mail,
  • promote suitable events through their local website
  • and show these events on their calendar with local times
All the local calendars will be merged into one Global Coach Conference Calendar, which will be accessible through the GCC website and can be viewed in the visitors' local time.

So, I am also creating for the globe
  • an e-mail address
  • a website (www.globalcoachconference.com of course)
  • a calendar

Connecting People

As part of my role as ICF Chapter Host in Gothenburg I am connecting coaches who want to develop their coaching skills in what we call triads. Two coaches coach each other and get feedback from a third coach. Often there is specific focus on certain skills or habits.

Nice to think that this could be made into a Global activity too. hmm, now who wants to coach and be coached by a professional coach, for free?

Contact me and I can connect you to other like-minded coaches.

Dreaming of 2010

From time to time I get a reminder that the effects of the GCC are still rippling around the world.

From time to time, I realise that I haven't yet taken advantage of the many contacts that were made on 9th September. Somehow the events of normal life have taken over again, and all my time is taken up in getting to and from work. And, although what I am doing every day is just what I want to be doing (= coaching), I am left with the sense that there are many opportunities generated by the marathon phone call on the 9th that have yet to be developed.

So, I will make a plan that includes contacting the hundreds of coaches who were involved around the world, and asking them what they see as the next step for them and the GCC. Maybe they will come back in 2010? Maybe they will speak?

Will you?

The Circle is Almost Complete

As October gets under way with autumnal mornings and longer nights I am reminded that the GCC is still having an effect on the world.

Several coaches have approached me to ask if they can speak at "the next Global Coach Conference", and I have begun negotiatons regarding intellectual rights plus tools and opportuntities for audio-video recordings. The theme for the conference seems very clear "7 Days to Change the World" is both broad in its scope and a stimulating title. These things and others will be discussed at the CTI Social Action Niche; where many of the ideas for the first conference were hatched!

I look forward to looking back on 090909 and forwards to Sept 2010

GCC 2010

The End of the Beginning
The recordings of the sessions from 9th September 2009 are safely posted to the Global Coach Conference website, where they will stay until the end of the year.

The Beginning of Something New
Now it's time to start looking at GCC 2010. The date is a week in September.

The theme is "7 Days to Change the World" and will be a series of world-spanning talks and workshops encompassing the multitude of ways that coaching is being used in Business, Sports, Health, Social Change, Education and other areas.

Input
We are open for input regarding these aspects of the conference:

Speakers
Who do you want to hear?

Communication Logistics
How can we include more voices in this global conversation?

That's all for now. You have until the end of 2009 to respond!

Jet-lagged

Jet-lagged after flying around the world all day yesterday during the GCC.

Will take some time to adjust my inner clock. Aim to publish the results by next Monday (no pressure!)

Halfway there, almost!

Writing this as Anthony Eldridge Rogers is interviewing Silvia de Ridder.

Taking a much-needed break!
Ha! I'm blogging, on FaceBook, have two e-mail accounts open and am running Skype in the background whilst half listening to Anthony and Siliva on speaker-phone.

Hmm. Need to learn to say "no".

Will be back

The Day Before

As I look at the clock I see that there is about half a day left before the start of the GCC.

Glowing connections
Before me I see a massive network of glowing connections. People (including coaches) will be connecting around the world. In the first three hours we have connections between Sweden, Canada and India. In the next three hours we move to Singapore, Australia and Trinidad. After that the next few hours are with Sweden, South Africa and Australia, followed by three more hours with Sweden, Brittany and the UK. Finally comes three hours with USA, Sweden and UK, followed by the final hours with Canada, Australia and Sweden.

Lots of Sweden, eh! Well we are the centre of the world - kind of.

What outcomes do I expect?
  • Stronger and more real connections
Certainly there will be stronger and more real connections between the people who have spoken and listened to the workshops and seminars. Listening gives a lot stronger connection than just reading about a coach or project on the net. There will be enrichment of and more commitment to ongoing projects, plus courage for some people to start or continue projects for change.

  • Coaching becomes "normal"
I see that the deep, honest, and supportive communication that exists between coaches, and between coaches and their clients becomes normal. People in all walks of life have the attitude and approach that coaches learn to use.

  • Generosity abounds
As we realise how to share what we have on this planet, we become more generous, and thereby we all receive more. We create together whatever we need; and share it.
What outcomes do I have now?
  • Sure and certain knowledge
What's coming out of running this conference is the sure and certain knowledge that I do have the ability to run a global conference, with minimal investments in terms of time and money. That knowledge has put many of my Gremlins to sleep.

  • The Urge to Do More
I'm still eager for more, I want to do this again. I want to run a conference in 2010 and for a whole week. I want to make the process of selecting speakers, and booking sessions much easier than this year. I want to put the lessons to good use. Next time "bigger and better", unless I come up with something even more audacious.

  • Generosity works
From the outset I have given freely of my time and money, what little there was. In return I have received more than I could ever have imagined possible. My cup filled and brimmed over in the first month. I know, from a place of deep certainty that generosity works.
There's more, and now it's time for tea
One more job to do then I can relax for the rest of the day

Hear you during the GCC
See you after the GCC
Yes, there is life after the GCC

Gentle Leaders, thank you!

Again, I find myself deeply grateful and, amazed by the power of a few words.

I had planned four "bio breaks" during the GCC day. These were called "TransZone - breathing space" and I intended leaving the conference lines open whilst I tended to my need for food, drink etc. This, I thought, would allow people to freely chat with each other across the world.

Later, I realised that these sessions would probably be too chaotic and unproductive since nobody knew who was "in charge" and what the specific "topics of conversation" might be. This may not be a problem in a café situation, but over the phone, hmmm?

So, I put out a request by e-mail for "Gentle Leaders to hold the sessions".
Within hours I had eight volunteers, all women.

Ladies, thank you! I can now go and eat, drink, sleep or whatever I need on four occasions during this day, enabling me to be present for the other 20 hours.

Furthermore
After booking three of the four sessions I had just the 7am session left. Opening my e-mails this afternoon there was one proposal... for the 7am session. That's what I call synchronicity.

GMT Clock

This clock shows GMT (Greenwich Mean Time)

For certain periods of the year, come countries use "Summer / Winter Time" and change the local time forwards or backwards by an hour. Unfortunately there is no agreement on when to do this and so the local times are less than easy to predict.
GMT is NOT London time. In the summer London time is 1 hour ahead of GMT.

GMT is also known as UST.

The Energy Flows

Looking back over the past months of July and August as the GCC grew from a small acorn into a young oak, there has been a flow of energy like I have never experienced before. And that's what I want to write about here.

An Acorn on the Head
Initially, when the idea was but a small acorn that landed on my head I was passionately in love with my own idea. I confess, I loved the idea from the start - as anyone near me at the time can tell you. And I was proud to have been given such an awsome and inspiring idea. I was met by some internal cultural resistance "Who are YOU to run a Global Coach Conference?". That's when I knew that I was committed to the idea, it WILL be done!

I pondered - I do that! I sat with the idea and asked myself "What does this look like when it is done?", "What are you creating?". The answers came "It's a phone conference!" and "I am connecting coaches who are passionate about change". That's when I posted the idea on the CTI website - end of June 2009.

Ice Cream please, with Flames of Passion
During July, I received e-mails and forum messages from dozens of inspired and supportive coaches. My energy at the time was right-brained. I was connecting with people at professional, spiritual and social levels, and that meant being sensitive to their different needs and motivations. What worked for one Speaker didn't always work for the next.

My energy level was high, yet I knew that this would be a long haul - all the way to the end of August. I gathered my strength and started pacing myself for what was, for me, going to be a marathon. For this idea to burn brightly for a whole month, through my entire summer vacation, was going to require careful tending of the Flame of Passion. And that's where the image of the "ice cream with flames of passion" came from. You know it, the logo that's been used for this conference! I planned which days and hours I would work with the conference, and which days and hours I would be with myself, or my family. I didn't keep to the plan, but it was very helpful to have it.

Logic and Logistics
Throughout July, the idea was still an idea. There was not much on the web - apart from this blog - to tell the world about the conference (now known as "the GCC"). So I used my HTML skills to design and create a website, and buy and set up a domain name and relevant e-mails. Key to the functionality of the website was a booking system that allowed people to see who was speaking and what their topics were; and then to make their choice, click a button and send me a message!

My energy was strongly left-brained. I was working with logic and logistics and had an extremely tight focus on detail, especially issues around "What time is it?"

AT THE SAME TIME

My energy was strongly right-brained. I was still communicating with twenty Speakers and Leaders. I am sure I have missed someone, but Facebook has helped me feel better about that since I know that some of the Speakers and Leaders read what's written there.

FB Connections
I knew that FB had played a strong part in the election of an American President, and that Michael Jackson had millions of Fans through FB, so I realised that this was the place to go for Listeners, people who wanted to listen to the Speakers.

Confused? Me? YES!
At this time I was in a state of confusion - how does FB work? How many listeners can we expect, how many can we deal with? How many are enough? How many are too much?
The number of connected sky-rocketed as people connected to the Page and the Event through FB. I decided that 150 people would be my target for the conference day, with a maximum of 1500 people involved in total over the year.

CTI- the Revelation
As the numbers spiralled upwards and normal phone lines seemed inadequate for the conference call, I turned to many different professional conference line providers. There were limits and costs to consider, also the complexity/simplicity of use. Again, I was in a state of confusion. I actually enjoyed this state, it showed me that I was deeply involved in the Process and that the Revelation would soon come.

It did. In the form of CTI, the Coaches Training Institiute who, in an extraordinary move cleared their conference lines for a whole day and night, to make the GCC possible. Tears of joy, and the revelation "of course, that's where it all started". My coaching education and training was with the CTI (and still is). Thanks Karen Kimsey House.

The End is in Sight
It's getting near the end now. My energy is almost spent, and yet the niggly, piggly, quibbly details keep popping up and asking to be solved.

Yesterday, I spoke on another phone conference and was given 5 minutes to inform the audience about the GCC. As I spoke, the Flames of Passion flew brightly into the air. Now I know that I have plenty of reserves and will walk the marathon of a 24-hour global phone conference of "Dreams and Visions" with skill, grace and ease; and empassioned determination.

Are you passionate about coaching?

There is a single hope for this conference that has not been fulfilled, yet.

We have ONE session remaining on the Global Coach Conference.
It's at 14:00 GMT, the perfect time to reach the whole world.

Is this for you?

The overall theme is "Dreams and Visions"

What would your topic be?

Prior to this, she managed a range of not-for-profit organisations and projects and her previous roles included being the CEO of the Women’s Resource Centre – a pan-London organisation working to give women and women’s organisations a voice in public policy. She has been featured in national UK media including The Times and The Observer for her work coaching women who are trying to decide whether to have children or not. Her passion for polarities comes from a long held commitment to working around diversity and difference – she has engaged on a personal level with holding thetension between opposites. Yearning for Wholeness

Speaker Beth Follini

Guests to be announced

Clients come to coaching with a yearning for wholeness, to be able to integrate parts of themselves and hold the tension of opposites (eg being vs doing) with ease.

Polarity coaching has its roots in many ancient spiritual traditions including Buddhism. Quaker thought and practice particularly engages with paradox, polarity and wholeness. The polarity-coaching model we will be exploring in this call with its gives coaching a depth and transformational aspect that we believe is absent in many coaching models. This is not to say that the coach or client needs to believe in a particular religious tenant. However, polarity work will always bring to the coaching that sense of transcendence, of moving up the spiral.

In the first half of this call we will explore polarity coaching, how coaches can enable their clients engage with polarity and begin to experience the third energy or wholeness when they do.

In the second half of this call we will then explore Quaker thought and practice - and look at some of the similarities with co-activity. A number of special guests will take part in the discussion - both those engaging with polarity coaching and those involved in Quakerism.

Coaching for transition; Permaculture and personal change

Speaker Jeanette Isaacs-Young

You will be part of a fresh synthesis of thought and ideas blossoming after the ICFA conference in Adelaide, South Australia, September 1, 2, 2009, which intends to host conversations which will be “a catalyst for global change on many levels”.

Jeanette is leading a workshop there to explore and imagine some new possibilities for a radically different future, and the roles coaches might play in getting us there. We will consider ways coaches might catalyse change in our clients and communities for an energy lean, time rich, less stressful, healthy happy future - in a desirable sustainable world.

Jeanette has been noticing the way her permaculture design garden, and the regular daily attention her family give to this, reflects the changes clients make when they begin choosing to live in ways which are happier and more personally able to be sustained. Resilience increases, and ease and flow feature - and people require timely support and ongoing connection to sustain their pioneer positions/initiatives during turbulence ( inner or outer).

Simplifying life and making healthy choices for our own body mind and spirit, creates a sense of ‘sufficiency’, of ‘enough’; and so delicious nurturing daily actions naturally evolve in ways which are also good for the planet, and evolution of consciousness.

Join us for a global follow on and flow on from the Adelaide workshop, as we whisper a new story, spark a new vision, and fan the flames of passion into action.

Speaker: Alison Skinkle

Alison Skinkle is a CTI (Coaches Training Institute) trained and nearly certified Co-active Life Coach, who works with people that are looking to live a life of purpose.

Drawing from her own experiences with living a purposeful life Alison can help you identify your passions and find ways to express that passion in a manner that is fulfilling and exciting.

After six years in the hospitality field Alison found that she did not enjoy this work, that all she could see in people were the negative traits. She decided she wanted to see people for who they really are and eventually found her way to Coaching. Now she gets to see people for their magnificence and for what they are capable of creating.

Alison believes that when we are living with purpose we are living in a way that best expresses who we are and that THIS is the key to happiness.

Alison’s nature of being is loving, gentle, trustworthy, dependable and always at your side. When she is living from this place she is living with her sense of purpose. Her expression of this is Life Coaching. Alison believes that this is the natural order of life; live from your being and do something that expresses that .

Alison teaches the power of choice. In every experience, we choose who we want to be and how we experience it and that no matter what we choose it is always the perfect experience in that moment.

Finally Alison believes in living from your heart. When you are doing this you are living your sense of purpose. It is this value that had her leave home at 18 for school, that led her to the other side of her country to find her spiritual self and that led her to the other side of the world from Canada to Australia in order to be with the man she loved.

Schedule is (almost) complete

After just one month of strenuous and hectic action we have filled a whole day with
  • twelve interesting interviews and talks with leaders and speakers
  • four breathing spaces, for just chatting with each other
  • three sessions for information, reports and reflection
All these events knit together the themes of "Dreams and Visions" and "Ignite the Flame of Passion for Change".

And now we have the Global Coach Conference Schedule. Just two spots remain waiting for the leaders / speakers to make final adjustments and commitments.
There may be some small changes in the next month.

"Ignite the Flame by Using the Body as a Resource for Change"

Speaker: Marlena Field, PCC, CPCC

Coaches often say to me, “I am always in my head” and that it interferes with their ability and confidence to include the wisdom of the body in the coaching conversation. Many coaches have not been trained to use the body as a resource for change. They would like to become more skilled in using body-centered skills - to move their clients to a greater depth of insight, self-awareness and self-acceptance.

On the call, Marlena will share with us the foundation of the Body-Centered Coaching Method and the enormous impact the method has on coaches and clients. She will share some client stories that demonstrate some of the techniques. She will lead a short exercise on being mindful and noticing your present moment experience.

Speaker: Dr. Ajay Nangalia ACC

Biography: Dr. Ajay Nangalia ACC, coaches corporate executives in India and Asia. He has over 25 years experience as a corporate executive, OD consultant and executive coach. His doctoral and current research interests focus on how executive coaches need to understand the cultural context of the society, and the organizations they work with. He is passionate about creating a global community of coaches who are sensitive to various cultures, and who can adapt to the cultural needs of their clients.

"Building Bridges - Why Coaches need to understand cultural differences"

Speaker Dr. Ajay Nangalia ACC

Linking to the themes of "Dreams and Visions", "Ignite the Flame of Passion for Change in your Community and pass it on, around the World"

My talk is integral to this theme because as coaches we want to be part of a global profession. However, many international coaches may assume that their training and approach which are effective in a Western social context are universally applicable. This is not true. Cultures in Asia are very different at an individual, community, and organizational level! As a global profession and community, coaches, especially from the West, must understand how they need to adapt their thinking and coaching process to suit their Asian clients. Only then can we truly create bridges across the world. Only then can we work as a community with a common passion, vision and dream.

Speaker: Jeanette Isaacs-Young ACC

Jeanette’s passion lies in helping people uncover their life’s purpose, and to live life ‘on purpose’. Everyone is busy with something, but our busy-ness is not always our passion, or connected with our abilities. Life’s purpose is according to ones underlying nature. What is that nature and how do we find it? For each of us there is an area of occupation that is stimulating and rewarding. But we are not always there. What liberation when we find the work that truly nourishes us, (and also pays the bills!).

Jeanette has three decades of experience as an Occupational Therapist, with a reputation as an educator with heart, a therapist who cares more than people expect, and as someone who treats all people with a consistent respect. She has at her disposal, a unique combination of skills and insights to share. People appreciate the calming influence they experience in her company, and the self confidence she inspires.

"Unlocking Your Potential for Change"

Based on the 4 step process created by Kegan/Lahey and described in their latest book ("Immunity to Change")

Pearl will coach us through the process that helps us look clearly at our commitments, and then look at what we are doing and what we are not doing that might be obstructing our ability to fulfill our commitments. The final stage surfaces the assumptions and beliefs that fuel the competing commitments, and then we work with a plan to take steps to test those beliefs and assumptions.

"It is a powerful model that I use A LOT with all of my clients and as I lead people through it I can take examples from the group, which will enable us to explore commonalities and differences. Where appropriate I can also share my own thoughts." Pearl Mattenson

Flame of Passion

What is it that makes coaches so passionate about coaching?

Is it the opportuntiy of persuading other people? Coaching skills are akin to Leadership and Sales skills. Certainly there are plenty of business coaches who offer their services.

Is it the opportunity of helping other people? Coaching skills are similar to therapy, concelling and other support services. And there are plenty of coaches who work with private individuals, families, non-profit organisations and schools.

Or, is it that coaches have realised how important and simple it is to access their Life Purpose, and want the same for other people too.

Maybe all of the above, and probably more!

I want to hear from coaches all around the world what makes them passionate about coaching, and to share this with others who are beginning to find what coaching is all about.

Speaker: Alan Wilson

Alan says, "I believe every child has limitless potential. It starts as a spark catching fire and needs to be identified, protected, nurtured, developed and respected. This spark must grow into a strong flame to survive the school system, parents under pressure and the influence of some peers.

My passion is to globally develop millions of children wholistically. I am achieving this by using my experience of life, coaching techniques and the laws of the Universe to empower children and the people that influence them. My vision is to create an ethos of empowerment around young people.

Together, we will fan the flames of self-esteem and confidence to explode the potential of the world's children."

"There is a real hunger for something different"

Linda Lea and Susan Moss

Linda and Susan will share their personal journey in taking coaching and leadership skills to rural areas of E. Africa and inner city schools in London working with young people of different faiths. They are at a crossroads in their work, and want to dialog with others about what seeds need to be planted to inspire young people to be the leaders of tomorrow. Our youth are the future, and they will meet life's challenges given direction and support. Linda and Susan want to move this work forward and need the insight and ideas of others.

They welcome all to join in and share the experience.

"Silken ties of love and thought"

with Bob Janes

working with connections and relationships

A Robert Frost quote that seems to capture the idea

She is as in a field a silken tent
At midday when the sunny summer breeze
Has dried the dew and all its ropes relent,
So that in guys it gently sways at ease,
And its supporting central cedar pole,
That is its pinnacle to heavenward
And signifies the sureness of the soul,
Seems to owe naught to any single cord,
But strictly held by none, is loosely bound
By countless silken ties of love and thought
To every thing on earth the compass round,
And only by one's going slightly taut
In the capriciousness of summer air
Is of the slightlest bondage made aware.

"Becoming where we came from"

Speaker: Anthony Rogers

All of us are creating in each moment ...

Creating our future from our past ...

And this is an important time in history to be deciding what we are creating.
Who we are becoming ...

So it is fitting that this call is rooted in Africa where countless human souls share a common ancestor. Way back in those times our forbears had no idea of where their offspring would arrive but no doubt would be amazed at all we have achieved.

And yet …… how do we move forward and embrace the possibility that we can make the right decisions?

On this call we will travel together to the far future, to the future selves of us that will live in many generations time. From that place we will ask……

* How to create a compelling sustainable future for us humans to prosper in for many millennia to come?
* How can we bring co-activity to every aspect of our lives?
* How can we be co-active with our environment?
* What do we want to tell ourselves about what is most important to us?
* What do we hope for?

Time and Date

If it's 9am in the UK...
what time is it in Australia?
and what time is it in America?

I was brought up in the UK, a country that is not only monolingual but also has a single timezone. For those of you who live in or were brought up in America or Australia for example, you may well be used to multiple timezones. Whilst planning this Global event I am frequently asked by Leaders, Speakers and Participants "What time is the conference?", and that's a challenge to answer, so I have prepared some sample times and dates.

Sample times and dates
The conference phone lines will open at 00:00 GMT, and close at 24:00 GMT on 9th September 2009

Blue = 10th September
Green = 9th September
Red = 8th September

10:00 14:00 18:00 22:00 02:00 06:00 10:00 Australia
12:00 16:00 20:00 24:00 04:00 08:00

24:00 04:00 08:00 12:00 16:00 20:00 24:00
UK
02:00 06:00 10:00 14:00 18:00 22:00

15:00 19:00 23:00
03:00 07:00 11:00 15:00
USA
17:00 21:00 01:00 05:00 09:00 13:00

In Australia (where the local time is GMT +10 hours for example), this means that the conference phone lines will
open at the local time 10:00 on 9th September and
close 10:00 on 10th September

In America (where the local time is GMT - 9 hours for example), this means that the conference lines will
open at the local time 15:00 on 8th September and
close at 15:00 on 9th September

I hope that helps!

Overlapping Time Zones

For planning convenience, the conference has been split into a number of time zones. The coaches who have volunteered to be local Leaders hold the conference for "their" time zone. At the end of each hour the Leader will hand over the baton (= microphone) to the next Leader. Do you feel ready to be a local Leader?
Contact us
at globalcoachconference@underandover.se

SpinZone overlap - passing on the baton
When two calls immediately follow each other, we shall allow 10 minutes for getting to know the names of coaches and projects in the other time zones, before the next time zone starts its own agenda.

TransZone overlap - breathing space
Where there is space in the planning we shall have a longer overlap, for up to an hour, to allow time for deeper and stronger connections to be made between the coaches and projects in other time zones, sharing Dreams and Visions.

On Call - 24 hours
The Global Coach Conference Team, based in Sweden, will be on call for 24 hours supporting the local Leaders.

The Global Conference Aims

There are many!

We have discussed the many aims of running a global conference, and I have noted here a few of the results that we expect and want to get out of this day. These aims are so rich that they deserve closer inspection. What's in them for YOU?
  • Awakening awareness of what coaching can do for people in business, education and many social and environmental projects around the world
  • Connecting coaches in an effective, invigorating and engaging manner
  • Creating a wave of consciousness around the globe
  • Linking many ongoing projects as well as inspiring new projects

Awakening awareness - for whom?
I am fairly sure that coaches are already aware of the benefits of coaching ... for people in business, education and many social and environmental projects around the world. And, for coaches it's always a boost to hear that the same benefits and opportunities for coaching are available around the globe, it hints at a potential global income. That might be something that will interest you?

So what about your potential clients? Do they know, in the same way that you do, what the benefits are? Would they be interested, or indeed persuaded, by hearing examples from the coaching community? Hearing it is not the same as reading about it. You have probably already reached those clients who are convinced by what they read (your handouts and website, for example). Together we will be creating a sound file that can be added to your sales tools. For your potential clients, hearing another coach talk about the benefits of coaching is not the same as hearing you talk about it. Perhaps you will get more and different clients this way?

Connecting coaches, why?
If there's one thing coaches LOVE, it's getting connected to other like-minded coaches. Perhaps it's because we are so spread out that maybe we don't meet and talk to enough coaches in our working day. And anyway, how many coaches is "enough"?

One of our aims is to connect coaches who have similar or complementary interests and goals. You probably have a web presence of some kind, and get some coach connections that way. We think that listening to, talking with and sharing with other coaches over the phone will aid the development of the kinds of connections that are important to you. For me, in the last two weeks since I started this Global Coach Conference I have made connections with a dozen great coaches and leaders, some of them will probably be lifelong connections.

Creating a wave of consciousness
There is something primal about a wave. What about a wave of flames, the Flames of Passion. We saw a kind of awakening ceremony, with people raising awareness of the benefits of coaching as the sun came up over the horizon.

We saw coaches in one time zone passing on their Flame of Passion to the coaches in the next time zone. This also became a passing of passion from one generation to the next as we expect there to be a mixture of older and younger coaches as well as more experienced and less experienced coaches on the conference call. This is an opportunity for co-creating what needs to be created.

Linking many projects
At the practical level, we can see that the success of some projects will inspire others to dare to start projects of their own. And the needs of ongoing projects can be met by those who hear the call. And who knows how many projects that can be combined and thus strengthened by synergy effect?

Being First
And not least of all, being the first around the globe, around the day, phone conference. I guess that no-one has done this before, (If you know someone who has organised an around the day, around the globe conference, let me know - I need support)

Co-Creation in action, a powerful meeting of minds

Part of the CoActive way of working is to co-create. The CoActive Social Education Niche contacted me to speak about the Global Coaches Conference, and we recorded our brainstorming discussion.

Listen to the recording, it's inspiring!
You can listen to or download the mp3 audio file from http://www.coactivenetwork.com/webx/.59bef405/

Introduction written by the "Social Action Niche"
Martin Richards has conceived of a “Global Co-Active Conference Day” on September 9, 2009 as a 24 hour conference call that wraps around the world with coaches checking in--time zone by time zone--sharing their visions and co-creating.

Phone Conference with the Social Action Niche

Some of the exciting ideas that came from the call

The Aims There are many!
  • being the first around the globe, around the day, phone conference

Communication Mechanics We want the coaches conference call to be accessible to as many people as possible, at a minimum cost. The easiest way is to use a free conference line. There is one in Sweden +46 (0)8 5000 5000. We decided to set a date to test the limits of this conference line! (Why not join us)

Coaches from different backgrounds We relish differences! We want the call to attract all coaches, not just CoActive coaches - even though this is where we started. Ya gotta start somewhere!

Overlapping Time Zones For convenience, the conference is split into a number of time zones. The leaders hold the conference for "their" time zone. At the end of each hour the leader will hand over the baton (= microphone) to the next leader. Why not spend 10 minutes getting to know the coaches and projects in the next time zone? There could be an brief overlap before the next time zone starts its own agenda.

Coaching Hours Bank We want to create a bank of coaching hours that can be used around the world. Participating coaches can donate any number of hours to the Global Conference and the Leaders can suggest projects people that we would support through our coaching.

Linking Themes We have an Olympic imagery going for us. Passing the call from person to person reminds us of the Olympic flame, and yes passing on the "Flame of Passion" is what we are about. We also had an idea that we could create a collaborative story, where the leaders would - towards the end of the hour - tell the story of the people, events and projects in the earlier time zones and add their own part to the story, so that the story would grow as we move around the world.

Environment A theme that we could support is work that focuses on creating an environment that we, and future generations can live in.

Generation We saw that coaching the younger generation would be a natural choice for us. This could be interpreted locally in many ways.

Key Speakers Of course every coach has their role to play, and some well-known coaches could play larger, bolder, more attractive roles. We are looking for key speakers who can lead or take part in discussions, or whom we can interview. This would attract coaches to listen in to the Conference Day, rather than choose any other option that may be available to them that day.

Clients Why not let clients speak too, about how their lives have changed through coaching perhaps.

Structures The calls can be structured in a variety of ways, we came up with a few

  • Interview with a Master Coach
  • Interview a local project leader
  • Discussion about a book (eg. "A Whole New Mind", Dan Pink)
  • Co-creation on a theme
  • Report on ongoing global and local project(s)
  • Inspiring music

And all this in one hour. This is a beautiful example of what great minds can achieve when they work together. Listen to the recording when it gets posted!

Global Coach Conference Day

Imagine having a coach conference that doesn't end

The high level of excitement and creativity in coach conferences is addictive. If you have had some, you want more! And that's how I felt after one particular CoActive conference call. I wanted it to go on, and on. It was such an inspiration to hear what is possible, and what's actually happening. I wanted to hear hear how coaches around the world are making things possible for their clients and themselves.

So, I posted an invitation, on the CoActive Community Leaders discussion forum, to co-create a global conference call under the overall theme of "Dreams and Visions" and within two weeks I found myself speaking to an impromptu team of coaches from around the world who wanted to make the conference come true. On our first planning call today 29th June there were coaches from USA, Canada, South Africa and of course Sweden.

9th September 2009
We have a date, 090909. We have an overall theme and several speakers. You, dear reader, are invited to join in with live discussions, interviews and co-creations on a range of coaching topics under the overall theme. You may be inspired to be a leader - get in touch.

Preliminary Speakers and Topics
The conference call number will be published closer to the date.

ROOTS - Exploring the roots of mankind
South Africa, Anthony Rogers

Coaching in Colleges - Driving the evolution of Education
Sweden, Martin Richards

Topic to be decided
USA, Reuel J Hunt (Mountain Time, Time Zone unknown)

Including the business community in the evolution of education
USA, Dorothy Eckes

The actual times of these calls depends on where you are on this spherical planet! We aim to run the conference for 24 hours - to begin with!
